The Establishment of a Spiritual Life with Mankind - Summary
The following is a brief summary of the lecture The Establishment of a Spiritual Life with Mankind. Reading this summary will help to increase your understanding of God's Divine order in bringing man into eternal life.
In this lecture one sees God's love triumphant, even though all man's celestial communication and conjunction with the Lord had ended. He now reaches mankind through his natural or external senses. He vivifies the 'remains' the goods and truths that were insinuated within, and internal or spiritual truths became known through the knowledge of correspondences.
This knowledge came through the written Word and, spiritually led man and, so, was established the Spiritual Church on earth. In the lecture, one comes to see that man no longer has perception of the Lord's goods and truths, nor does he have immediate revelation from God. However, the spiritual man could come to receive an internal dictate that was like a conscience leading him. His natural rational mind could be illuminated through the Word that had been recorded by the Most Ancient Church's prosperity. Thus, the spiritual man came to know the Lord through his understanding and not through his will as did the celestial man. He could reason whether something was true or not or good or not.
In this lecture one, also, learns of the various states the spiritual man came into. These are seen in the story of Noah and his three sons. To become spiritual, we see that man must go through reformation and regeneration and this is seen in the flood, which is understood as representing a flood of evils and falsities within man. It is pointed out in the lecture that the celestial man had turned from the Lord and had fallen from grace. Thus, sin entered man and that evil attaches itself to mankind and, thus, that man, now, has both good and evil affections that contend for him to rule him.
Yet, it is seen through his understanding, that man could receive the knowledge of the science of correspondences. These were revealed through their Word the Word that had been written by certain men of the Celestial Church, called Enoch. As a result, the spiritual man's intelligence increased and as he was obedient to spiritual or internal truths his spiritual nature became prominent with him. The spiritual man's doctrine was seen in his charity towards others. From this, one comes to see that he was of a completely different genius than the celestial, being led by his faith through the love of truths and, that the Lord spoke to him 'as if' through an internal dictate. Thus, instead of ideas, the Lord spoke through the written Word to them, for they no longer could perceived good and truth through their thought and instead of silent speech or ideas, they articulated their love. They were instructed through external means of the senses of what they learned from God's Word.
In this, the spiritual man's understanding of spiritual things came and through his knowledge of correspondences he could learn about God, Heaven and earth. These he acknowledged as true. One may read about the Ancient or Spiritual Church in the Word of the Old Testament, but what is read there is only of his natural history. The spiritual or internal understanding of these histories are closed to us, and in time, were closed to the spiritual man as was the celestial understanding closed the celestial man. It is seen in this lecture that a man's understanding of truths could enter and develop a new rational in him from the Lord whereby his faith came from his desire, that is, from his will to know the Lord and to believe and follow Him. Thus, keeping his affection on the Lord and towards the neighbor and not on his 'self' or on things of this world. It is in this way that the Lord, in them, overcame and was victorious over the evils that had entered them. One sees, here, the 'remains' that they had received from the Lord working in them. Because of their spiritual understanding, they waited for the Lord to come and worshiped Him as the Divine Human.
It is in this lecture, also, shown that the Lord was to come to save the Spiritual Church in man, for it is man's spiritual that can be regenerated and conjoined with the Lord. It is in the spiritual understanding that goods and truths that were insinuated into man's 'inmost' that these become of use. This is seen in their worship, which was, at first, an internal worship. However, it later became represented in external or natural things and, in time, ended in an external worship without any genuine truths and goods. You will come to see in this lecture that the cause of this was man's proprium, and, so, his love again turned to the love of self and for worldly gain. Such love becomes greater than a man's love of God and, so, the spiritual man did not live a life of charity any longer. And, it is in this love of self that the spiritual man turned away from the truth that he had learned through the Word where correspondences were taught. Thus, he began to use such knowledge for his own gain. God's will in him faded until his own will had come to rule and his understanding followed his desire for prominence and personal gain. In time his spiritual intelligence and internal truth became obscured and falsities entered, and the Word was lost, thus, ending the Spiritual Church on earth. The Israelitish Church followed and became a Church without any internal worship.
It was shown that in the Celestial Church man lived in a garden or paradise and that this was within their minds. In the Spiritual Church man is seen that he, too, lived 'as it were' within a garden within their minds, here, it was as a vineyard, from which fruit, the grape, were seen as the good of charity that the spiritual man came into. Thus, it was that the doctrine of this Church was of charity. It can also be seen that from grapes comes wine, which signify the truths of the spiritual man's faith.
This leads us to understand that the ancient or spiritual man's charity came from his love of faith. From this, one comes to understand that a man's celestial is from his will and his spiritual is from his understanding. Thus, it is that from the knowledge of spiritual things that the spiritual man became 'as it were, drunk or truths became obscured to him and, in time, he, too, fell as did the celestial man from his love to God to the love of self. The knowledge of correspondences between Heaven and earth is now lost to them and mankind.
In the lecture, one comes to see that man's spiritual was to rule his natural self, for in the spiritual is man's life, which is within his body, thus, his life is acted out through his natural body, where he lives in this world. It is the Lord's Word that man must learn and, thus, come to obey the Lord, but this, we have seen had been lost with the spiritual man and, his doctrine becomes one in his faith alone rejecting charity as did the celestial man.
This is evidenced in the fact that his worship turned to sacrifices, libations, and was represented in idols that he came to worship. Thus, the spiritual Church in man ended and his internal understanding became lost. However, in the spiritual man was implanted 'remains' of goods and truths and a new Church in man could be raised up again, which was seen in Abram, who was a descendent of the Hebrews, which was a descendent of the spiritual Church. A man's internal understanding of the Word was lost and, now, the Lord could not be even seen by man in representatives. God became worshiped as an unknown God, but this is explained in the next lecture The Third Church the Israelitish and Jewish Church: a man's natural preparation for the Lord's Coming: the vastation and consummation of falsities and evils within
