Redemption continued: Jehovah God, by His coming into the world, withstood that total damnation, and thereby redeemed mankind on earth and angels in the Heavens
By Rev. Paul Booth
In our last talk on redemption, we saw that a Church is within man and over the years man had turned away from the good of charity and had turned towards the falsities of faith and ends in total damnation unless redeemed. We also saw that the Lord has provided man with the means for his redemption through the written Word, (the Lord presence was no longer with man 'as it was' in the Most Ancient Church) but because of man's sin his spiritual life was cut off or closed and man ends up distorting the Word according to his own understanding through his natural senses (his understanding and will determines his life). Still, there is implanted within him the Church from what is called a remnant - those who adjoin some good of charity with faith.

What we are speaking about spiritually is that the Church in man develops like the stages of a man develops - his infancy, youth and man, to old age - which stages we saw was the good of charity, the truths of faith, and the marriage of charity and faith. So, we can understand that in the innocence of an infant and child man receives the good of charity - the Lord's love - through parents and others, (he is dependent on others for teaching him as was Adam or the first Church dependent on Jehovah) but because of the tendency through his self and what is called proprium to sin from his hereditary nature he sins, thus what he learns through his natural senses, he distorts, causing his faith to be founded on fallacies and falsities which lead him to evil and consequently the Church within him dies. Thus, it is that mankind comes into darkness rather than the light of Heaven where truth is known from the Lord and not from self. "Men loved darkness rather than light." (John 1: )

We were reminded that when Adam and Eve were drove out from Paradise they fell from the Lord's grace into sorrows and toil and were cursed to till the ground, by which is meant that they were to fight against the temptations of evil and that the subjugation of evils are a man's redemption and the bringing back of order into the Heavens. Basically, because of sin, the order of Heaven had changed. Truths and goods that had flown from the Lord God immediately into man now came to him through an external way, through one's self, thus man placed himself first or before God, that is, he had a love of self and the world. What was needed, now, was to establish a new Church within man. It is obvious man could not, of himself, become victorious over evils, for he did not have such power. Ask yourself who then could defeat the hells with all their evil? And, the answer is, of course, only God Himself. However, no evil spirit could stand before or in the presence of God, evil would flee and there would be no combat between the Divine and the evil. Combat had to be fought in the natural degree, in the external state where man now lived. Thus, the Lord had to come into that external state of life of man. He had to become a man as we with the tendency to sin and from where evil could tempt Him as we are tempted.

What you can begin to realize is that because of man's sin - the Adamic Church's turning away from God to 'self' or his proprium - that by wanting to know and to acknowledge by himself, man no longer could be in the presence of God, for he would parish as we learned evil would perish if allowed to stand before Him. Only by the Lord God's coming, by His putting on the human of mankind, could He fight evil as a man on earth and defeat them and this by subjugating evil in hell under His Power and thus, He can establish a new Church within the man. We had pointed out four essentials of the Church - one, to recognize the Lord God, two, to recognize the good of charity and, three, to recognize the truths of faith, and lastly, to live a life accordingly.

We had shown that the Church's end was because in the natural state of man evil prevails over good and so, also over Heaven. This resulted in the Church turning away from good to evil in its worship and the man no longer has conjunction with his internal or spirit, but there still is an external worship and so, the external man has dominion over the internal, the spiritual. Here, you can see the order has reversed where the Lord no longer is man's primary love. This was seen as the reason a man becomes a hypocrite. Lastly, we saw the Church on earth with man coming to its end and is described in the Word by 'being laid waste', becoming desolate', and finally, as having no good or truth as 'consummation' and 'being cut off' and in the 'fullness of time'. All this progression of the state of the Church and its death within man, we see historically depicted as also the Church on earth among people and is seen as the Most Ancient or Adamic, which is the first Church, the Ancient Church or the Noahactic Church is the second, and the Israelitish and Jewish Church the third, which had become only a natural and representative Church, and then came the Christian Church that the Lord in His coming established. So, historically, the declining state of the Church within man is seen literally in the Word, but the spiritual sense is not seen, that is until correspondences are taught once again.

The talk ended with our coming to understand that the first Christian Church on earth had ended and it was seen that the words spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ that 'then shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the Heavens shall be shaken' (Matt. 24: 29) which indicated its end and now that Christian Church exists in name only. It was then that we learned there was a remnant in man that if he wishes he can know and understand and do good, as thus, a new Church is again raised up - a new true Church that is Christian.

This remnant with man, of course, allows him, should he want, to truly know and understand and do good or will from the Lord and not from him self. A man has such freedom that he can look to either Heaven or hell. You may remember the story of Cain and Able bringing their offerings to Jehovah. Able's was accepted; Cain's was not and he was angry about it. Then, we see the Lord telling him, 'if you do well, shall you not be accepted?' By doing well is meant 'doing good' and good or acceptable worship is from a love to the Lord from the Lord and not from one's self 'as if' you could merit favor. >From an internal sense the offering Cain brought to the Lord - the fruit of the ground - signify a man's own good or his good works, thus from a church that is no longer the Lord's but man's. It is obvious a man to do well must do it from the Lord within him and this, without having the Lord's power within him, he cannot do and, we see that the whole of the Word after man's fall speaks of a time when the Lord Himself would come and redeem and save man. And, did not the Lord say, "All power is given unto Me"?
It is also obvious that all those who have died before the Lord came as a man to earth and actually redeemed man, had tried as best they could; they willed to do good from the Lord, that is, from a love to the Lord, the Lord has mercy on them and, does not just say, 'sorry, you sinned'. If that was the case, then what good is it for man to have freedom to choose? Therefore, a man who chooses to do well, but because of his tendency to sin, he succumbs and ends in hell. Where is the Lord's mercy and grace, and why did He promise to come and redeem and wait for thousands of years before coming when a man would sin despite all his effort? He would fail anyway. It is thus that everyone is held in equilibrium between Heaven and hell until he comes into spiritual world. Thus, man is held in freedom to look to or to turn away from Heaven. Then, when a man comes into the world of spirits after his death, he comes into the state of his life in which he was in the world. If he had desire to look to the Lord, he looks to Him in that spiritual world too. If he did not, he looks to evil as he did in this world. We can understand a man can will to live well, but because of his tendency towards the love of self and the world man will succumb and sin, unless the Lord is known and acknowledged or loved. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

In this there is hope of redemption. Surly, not every one who died before the Lord came on earth to mankind and became victorious over evil ends in hell? All one has to do is look at the Lord's transfiguration where Moses and Elias stood with Him. These two were in Heaven, yet we know from the Word that they had sinned. These two died before the Lord came and redeem mankind. These two, like we, do not have the power to defeat and subjugate evil from attacking and defeating them, but with the Lord's help He gave them the power even to be the sons of God.

Nonetheless, evil did destroy the Church and the power of evil was over the power of good and the equilibrium rose up 'as it were' coming from the world and threatened Heaven and infested even the angels. The Lord is a righteous judge and so, unless a judgment is effected on evil, no man on earth or angel in Heaven is safe. Thus, the Lord came in judgment when coming into the world, even as He came to redeem and save. Were not His fighting against the evils when He was tempted a judgment against them? Did not the Lord withstand the total damnation, and thereby redeem mankind on earth and angels in the Heavens? The Lord, that is, Jehovah God Himself came into the world to deliver man from damnation and He did this by combats against hell and victories over it, thus He subjugated it, reduced it to order under His control.

We see also that had He also created or formed a new Church at His Coming again in truth and in good. It is from a new Heaven that He created a new Church. Now, here is a mystery. We see a new Church established by the Lord through the disciples and eventually it was called the Christian Church. Yet, we see mention of a New Church and a new Heaven that is seen after there is the Last Judgment as told in the book of Revelation. And yet, by the Lord's acts of overcoming evils while in this world, He put Himself into the ability to save all who believe in Him and does His commandments. Further, we know that the Christian Church fell from their first love - from their love to the Lord and towards the neighbor - and that the Last Judgment was necessary to redeem and save man. The book of Revelation tells of the seven Christian Churches fall away from their first love - the Lord - and of the Last Judgment. The mystery is that the Christian Church established by the Lord when he came into the world is spiritually in its infancy and in innocence, though in its development had turned away just as the Churches on earth before did, until there had to be a final judgment, a judgment in which the evils of hell could no longer attack those coming into the spiritual world from this world, thus subjugating the evils in hell and bring order to Heaven. The evils not only attacked the angels and spirits but man as well who was on earth. This enabled the Church to progress and develop though the state of infancy to a man and into old age and live forever. In this there is seen redemption. This was surely what the Lord's salvation is - eternal life. In other words, the good of charity, the good of faith, and the living of these by man, effect his redemption and his salvation. Thus, such is not of himself, but of the Lord within combating and victorious over the evils attacking the man.

The question is: how is this effected practically in man? It enables man to follow the Lord's commandments and to repent of his sins against God. Wasn't this the gospel that was preached when the Lord came on earth? You can see that those who are penitent are redeemed and save, but not those who only say they believe and who do good works 'as if' of self.

The Lord, like a man, had to endure temptations and they were most grievous combats, even to the passion of the cross. Such temptations came not only from the Jewish Church as we see from the literal understanding of the Gospels and prophets, but they came from hell as well. We can understand that by temptations are meant combats against evils and falsities, and also, that temptation attacks both one's body and his spirit. We see this by the temptations the Lord endured in the 40 days in the wilderness. However, it is in the Prophets and Psalm that the temptations of hell are described. These could not be seen; they were not visible, for they were in the spiritual world where the Last Judgment took place. This is when the Lord subjugated the hells that were attacking Heaven and at the same time the Church on earth. Thus, it is that the Lord had to fight the hells and this is seen described in Revelation between Michael and his angels with the Devil or Satan and those who followed - that old serpent. In the spiritual sense this is understood as truth and good from the Lord coming into the Heavens overcoming falsities and evils of hell that was then threatening them.

It was not possible for redemption to be effected, nor for there to be salvation, except by God incarnate, which is to assume the Human in the world, for as mentioned, how could He fight against the hells where He became Human. This is what the world waited for. Both the Old and the New Testaments teach God became incarnate. Within all men's worship was sin, just as there was in Cain and we see that he killed Able, whose worship was good. Thus, all worship has lacking charity, having been separated and killed. Still, the written Word teaches that men are to give worship to God and that God accepts their worship when the Lord had not yet become incarnate. The reason God accepts their worship, even though it comes from a faith made by man was that they had respect to Him who was afterwards incarnate - made Human. They looked to the Lord God's Coming on earth.

You can read such words as 'Jehovah our Righteousness'. Jehovah our Redemption', 'Jehovah our Salvation' and 'Jehovah our Truth' and it is not difficult to see that these names are referring to Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is God incarnate and it is He who was able to fight against the hells and overcome them; He was tempted and suffered even on the cross. Unless the Lord God approached man, a man could not recognize or become conjoined with Him. Example: by the time the Lord came the Israelites, the Church then on earth, worshipped an invisible God and other nations worshiping not just various images of animals, and also man as God. Thus, it is in our faith - in truths in our thoughts, in our thinking - that we are conjoined with God, thus when God became Human that a man could have true faith - a faith that comes from charity and is one with charity. Charity is then no longer dead 'as it were' in man.

How is it that we know the true God and can recognize Him? It is not with our natural eyes, but with spiritual eyes. Thus, the Word teaches we cannot see God and live and that the Lord said that no one has seen the Father's shape nor heard His voice. Still, prophets have said they heard a voice and said God spoke to them. And, didn't God show Himself visibly to people of old though angels in a human form representative of God incarnate? In these, don't we see God operating and doesn't He operate through all things from first to last, thus from His Divine through His Human? And, had not the Lord put on the human of man and by His combats of temptations made His Human Divine, that is, He overcame all evil that attacked Him wanting to rule Him as they do man? In this, we can understand that He was glorified, and in this, man is redeemed and saved or regenerated. The reason that man is redeemed by this is that his thoughts are thoughts of truth and charity from the Lord, not from himself. Herein we see a new will and understanding being implanted within man

Unless God became incarnate by putting on the Human He would not be present with us in our natural or external life here on earth and there would be no redemption of man. Thus, in creation man is continually created or sustained and likewise, in salvation there is continual redemption. By this, a man is to 'have eternal life' who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Belief in the Lord Jesus Christ we have shown is first to recognize Him as the one only God. Second, is to recognize what are the goods of charity. Third, is to know the truths of faith and lastly, to live a life in accordance with them. Do we know the truths, the work of God? Do we know faith is to do charity - the works of God? Do we accept that our life comes only from the Lord and that the Lord is in us in truth and charity in our thoughts and in our acts, that is, that He lives within and is our redemption?

End.
