We see that the wife has her wisdom from the perception of her husband's affections, and that the man's rational wisdom is moderated by her love, and that neither the wife's wisdom nor the husband's rational wisdom is possible with the other. Why, you might ask, does the wife and the husband have a different wisdom? It is because of the differences between the masculine and the feminine. A man perceives from his understanding; the woman perceives from her love. Okay, but why cannot the woman perceive as the man, from her understanding? She does, but such understanding in her is not predominant. What is predominant in her is love; remember, a woman perceives from her love, while the man perceives from his understanding. And, the understanding can perceive things that are above the body and beyond the world. The understanding of the woman is from her love, and as such, pertains to the things in her life. Therefore, to a man there comes a rational spiritual sight, while a woman's love perceives only what is of life and only what she feels. This is the difference between the feminine and the masculine.
From this it is seen, that a woman may perceive beyond her feelings by drawing upon the conjunction with her husbands understanding. This is how God created us male and female so, the wife's wisdom is not possible with the man, nor is the man's wisdom possible with the wife. The wife's wisdom is from love; the man's wisdom is from understanding. One is of good and the other is of truth.
Because of her love, because of the woman's will, a woman continually thinks about conjoining the man to her. You can see that for the man he thinks only of conjunction with the woman inconstantly and is according to the changes of heat or of non-heat, that is, according to his affections, and of physical attraction, which is caused according to his virile powers. A woman's mind may indeed be interrupted by her work and various affairs that she does; still, her thoughts remain in the affection of her love and do not separate itself from that love, as it does with the man.
Now, there is a sphere that goes forth from the love that we have. This probably is something that most people are unaware of, yet, most of us, when we think about it, know that not only from animals, but from plants as well that there comes a natural sphere that draws the opposite sex. Therefore, from mankind, there is a natural sphere continually flowing forth.
The concept that from love, which is a spiritual entity, that a sphere goes forth is understandable when you think that the love of the male and the female, when conjoined, reproduces itself; that there is in each the inclination and the faculty to unite one with the other. With the wife, it is her sphere of life and from her love of her husband's wisdom, that she conjoins herself with her husband. Again, she is conjoined to her husband by appropriating, that is, by receiving what is his own the forces of his manhood. Still, this takes place only when there is mutual spiritual love.
Let us understand what spiritual love is or what is the love of spiritual things. It is love towards the neighbor or charity; it is the love of truth, which proceeds from the Lord. It is love to God. It is this love that makes us into an image of God. If this is mutual between the wife and her husband, then the wife is conjoined with her husband. If, by this, that the wife's life becomes a life that is unanimous with her husband, as it were, these, then, become a union of their souls and of their minds. In effect, the many things of the husband's mind are received by the wife's ability to appropriate her husband's wisdom; the result is they become 'one flesh', so to speak, as the Lord has taught. The reality is the wife receives into herself her husband's image. These are the things of the man's wisdom, which are the properties of his soul and his mind. Spiritually, at this state, the woman is no longer a virgin, but is a wife.
From all this, the inclination and the conjunction of the woman, of her special perception to know her husband, of the sphere of her life, and of her appropriating the forces of her husband's manhood, causes amazing and wonderful results. The woman, by her ability to perceive, sees and feels in herself the things that are in her husband and is she able to communicate and know his love. What is so amazing and wonderful is that a woman perceives from communication, sees from the aspect, that is, from appearance of things in his life, and feels from the touch. In effect, the woman becomes the heart of man 'so to speak', that is, becomes his love. Basically, the wife is created to be the will of good, the husband the understanding of truth. Simply stated, the husband is truth, the wife the good. They are good and truth in form, and when they become one, good is in truth and truth is in good, the one is of the other. One acknowledges the other mutually and reciprocally. This marriage is the source of conjugial love between husband and wife. Therefore, the soul of the wife is the husband's and she is the heart of her husband 'as it were', which means his love or charity, thus his will.
So, we learn that the woman is made as a different use in life than is the man. The woman fills the use of love or of good, while the man the use of wisdom or of truth. And, when together, receive and enjoy the happiness of Heaven. We know that there are proper offices or uses of the man and proper offices or uses proper to the woman, even though, today, there seems to be an effort for women to fill as many of the uses or offices of men. When one thinks about the fact that the male and the female are different as are wisdom and love, and as are thought and affection, or as intellect and will, we need only ask the question: What is the leading part of man in life; what is it of woman?
In man is the understanding - the thought and wisdom. In a woman it is the will - love and affection. Whereas, the woman performs her office or use from her love, - from her affection and will - while the man's office or use is from his understanding, thought and wisdom. The thing that is different in the offices or uses of woman is the affection and perception; they are different from a man's understanding; things are viewed differently from the understanding, which is of justice and judgment, while the woman's are from love, which is of affection.
Yet, these two, when they are conjoined, are of mutual aid and they become one. The wife and the husband work together as a team mutually aiding the other. The wife's office or use is adjoined with her husband's office or use, and there is then a conjunction. One such office of the wife and her husband is the education of their children. Another is the management of the home.
The aim and purpose of the woman's love tends toward the husband's wisdom. And, the husband's love for her conjoins her with him; he is the recipient of her love so that they may become one in love. This love is called conjugial love when it becomes one - good with truth and truth with good. It is a union of souls, a conjunction of minds, and an effort to conjoin the body.
Earlier, there was mention of this love and that it was called a marriage, so to speak, of good and of truth or that of love or will with truth or understanding. Now, it is love that conjoins not the understanding. Man's understanding or wisdom only loves truth and, if it were not for the wife, who loves the husband and who receives his love - the love of wisdom - and causes the understanding to become conjoined with the will, in other words, truth with the good, there would be no conjugial love with mankind. Remember that this inclination to conjoin is continual and perpetual with the woman, and as a result, a woman is born with love being prominent and could be called 'loves'. When she loves her husband, he returns his love to her. She, for the most part, makes this happen. Otherwise, his love of wisdom becomes an evil love, and as was said, this is called pride and the love of self-intelligence.
This marriage of good and truth in each person contains within it innocence and peace, also tranquility and inmost friendship, it give full confidence, and there is a mutual desire of the mind and the heart to do every good to the other.
Now, you can understand why we are created male and female - one for the reception of wisdom, the other for the reception of the love of that wisdom, that we might both receive Divine Love from the Lord. Thus, we, as recipients of good and truth, may receive all things blessed, become happy and delightful and have pleasure, which is a life from Divine Love through Divine Wisdom.
End.
