The female is born as the voluntary or the will; she is born to be the love of man's wisdom. These terms - intellectual and voluntary - are often seen used in Word and need to be explained in order to know what they signify. We spoke of good and truth coming into us from the Divine united or 'as it were' married. However, that we may receive these two qualities - love or good and wisdom or truth - we were created with having two faculties - one called the understanding and the other called the will. The understanding is the faculty of truth from which one gains intelligence, and the will is the faculty of good, and as was said, from love comes good. By love there is affection or a desire - a willing. You can see that love or the will or a person is called the person's voluntary, while wisdom or truth is the person's intellectual. The voluntary is one's will and the intellectual is one's understanding.
We have implanted within us from creation the ability and the will to be conjoined one into the other. And, this is possible through conjugial love, that is, by good and truth that each person accepts, receives, and by these becoming united within the mind and soul. These are the spiritual existence of a man and because they are spiritual they cannot be found in space, but they can be seen or known in appearances of space and, therefore, can be known in one's life, here, in the natural world. Now, since the will and the understanding in mankind or the soul and the mind of a person are celestial and spiritual and are not of the natural, they can be conjoined unlike the body of a female and male, which cannot be conjoined into one being. The one faculty can enter into the other and one can be delighted at its conjunction.
We have spoken about there being an inclination in both man and woman to be united as in a marriage. When we see this inclination in the woman, we see a very special love that is foremost in causing the union of good and truth in the man as well as in herself. The wife's inclination to unite the man to herself is constant and perpetual, while the man's is not constant and is alternating. Because the woman is born 'love' she loves to unite herself to another so that she is loved in return, the love, of course, being life's essence. Love never stops; it continually is working. If love is restrained in any way, it will perish just as fire, if restrained, will die. It is the woman that is blessed with this special love, which love is instrumental in bringing true happiness in the marriage between the male and the female - between husband and wife.
Let us, now, look at the man. Let us see what is his inclination to be conjoined with the woman. Instead of being constant and perpetual, his inclination is neither constant nor perpetual. Instead, he is the recipient of love; love is not prominent in him as it is in a woman. A man wants to receive love; He also wants to become wise and that is his love. So, a man comes into various states of love according to his understanding or mind. Thus, he cares for this thing or for that thing that come into his life. Yes, he cares for his wife, but he also cares for other things that occupy his mind. Sometimes his virile powers increase other times they decrease. His inclination to be joined with his wife is inconstant and is alternating. In point of fact, when he loves the things that cause him to become prideful and to love his self intelligent, then any conjunction with his wife is thawed, but if his love is turned towards his wife, then there is a mutual inclination and conjunction ensues. You can see that if not for the woman man would not be conjoined with good. And, you could say, if not were for the man woman would not become conjoined with truth. It is necessary to understand that the love that conjoins a person with God and Heaven is in both the male and female. And, that if they are not conjoined or married in this life, they may still develop the love of good from truth and the love or truth from good. Good and truth can be conjoined within them. There is still the desire of the woman with the man and the man with the woman when they are spiritual and are in Heaven. There is still the longing of good and truth to be united within each one.
The Word teaches us that a man is inspired by the wife's love to be conjoined with her and that he receives that love according to his wisdom. However, what is revealed to us is that the wife conceals that love from the man. So, the man thinks that it is his love that conjoins them, yet, as we just learned, the man receives her love; he is the recipient of love. Though, the man thinks that he loves and that the wife receives love. In truth, it is the wife who loves; therefore wives are called 'loves' and the husbands are the receivers of love. Remember, it was said men are formed the understanding, and the understanding receives truth and truth covers good, which is of love that it may exist with us. Women are loves, though women are thought to be obedient to men and the men the ones who love. However, women persuade the men to believe that they are loves and that they, the woman, receive their, that is, the man's, love and are, therefore, in obedience. There is still the desire of good and truth to become united.
Let us learn why it is that a woman inspires or insinuates love into a man. It is because the man does not have conjugial love, or even a love of the sex. What men have is the love of becoming wise and the love of wisdom and, if not for their wives, the love of wisdom in them would remain and, this love would turn into evil; the man becomes prideful; as such, he is in love with his own intelligence. Thus, the woman was made with a love for her husband's wisdom. The man loves his wife because of the love of wisdom that is in her from him. In this, we see that the woman is the love or the will, while the man is the wisdom or the understanding and when these become one there is then a marriage. Their love is conjoined; there is a union of Divine Good with Divine Truth within them as there is in the angels in Heaven.
It is primarily the wife whose inclination is to unite the man with herself, not the husband's inclination and that this causes conjunction of her love with her husband's wisdom, and that she does this in two separate ways. These are both prominent within in him within his mind or in the understanding. In these two ways, the man's has rational wisdom and moral wisdom. What the rational wisdom is, we easily can understand, since it belongs to the understanding alone. A man's moral wisdom belongs to the understanding too, but it also belongs to life. Life, of necessity, is of delights and of pleasures of wisdom, and these are of a man's affection. It is what constitutes life with man. In this, we see that life is in the understanding of truth and in the willing of good. In any study of Conjugal Love concerning the rational wisdom of man, we learn that in general this is of science, of intelligence and of wisdom, and particularly of the man's rationality and judgment. Concerning moral wisdom, we see that a man's moral virtues have regard for life. These virtues are called temperance, which speaks of self-restraint, benevolence, friendship, sincerity, courtesy, and many other things. These, together with what is called spiritual moral virtue, which comes from God and from our love towards the neighbor, are, in fact, the laws of religion - charity, truth, faith, conscience, innocence and many others things as well. In these, one can see that justice and judgment are dominant - justice in moral wisdom and judgment in rational wisdom.
How does the wife effect the conjunction between her and her husband? It is through these - rational and moral wisdom - that she can effect a conjunction with her husband. As a wife, rational things that are of man's understanding are within her; that is, she inwardly recognizes and favors them from her husband. The wife or the woman has moral wisdom very similar as her husband or man has - her virtues being like a man's. In this way, the wife can conjoin them by partaking of the man's intellect or of his will. Thus, when united, they are like a marriage of the understanding and will or of good and truth. In fact, it is the wife who knows these virtues in her man better the man himself does. The wife's conjunction with her husband's moral wisdom is from without, but with his rational wisdom, the conjunction is from within.
Here, it is revealed that the wife knows her husband's affections and that she can moderate them. The man doesn't have this special perception that the woman has. Herein, a woman, from her love, that is, from the love of what is good, can help effect a conjunction with her husband unknown to him. A man does not know that his wife has this special perception to know what his affections are. She, as it were, stores them within her mind and heart. The fact, that she does this is a declaration of her love for her husband. As a woman and wife, you probably know that when you speak about the affections of your husband, which is speaking of knowledge, understanding, and of wisdom, and of being wise, that this will cause him, as it were, to become cold towards you. You see, he wants to be the smarter one in the marriage. Therefore, it becomes your hope, friendship, confidence, and happiness in life that you keep these things hidden from him. Of course, this tells us something about the love of man.
