In showing what part the love of a woman or man plays in marriage, first, we use a word that probably most will not be familiar with and confuse it with another. This word is conjugial. People very often think that it is mispronounced it, thinking what is mean conjugal - the physical love or marriage or relation between husband and wife. Briefly, conjugial love is founded on the marriage of good and truth. You can understand that it is, then, spiritual and is not a natural love, though it does come into the natural state of man. It is a conjunction of minds and therefore a friendship. Conjugial love delights in wisdom. And, here is an important description: It is not the love of the sexes, but it is the love of one of the sexes. It is the marriage of good and truth and comes from the Lord Himself. In the Word, such love - Conjugial Love - looks at the complete person - the soul, mind, and body; so in fact a person is either female or male not only naturally, but spiritually as well. So, the love of each person remains and is not changed even after leaving this world when the natural state ends.
The question arises: what is female? What is male? What makes a woman feminine and the man masculine? We are all persons and are often called 'man' meaning, of course, mankind refering to both sexes. Yet, we are either male or female. From a merely natural understanding, we say that one sex is different from the other and that the purpose of the sexes is for propagation - the continuance of the species. However, we have said that we are not merely natural, but are spiritual; that we have a body, a mind, and a soul. So, there is a higher purpose: a spiritual purpose, which is for the producing of love or good and truth.
The Word of God reveals to us that our soul in its origin is celestial, it is our inmost. For there is where we are conjoined with God. There is where the Lord makes His abode. Our mind from its origin is spiritual; it is our mediate or internal and it is where we 'as it were' meet the Lord and communicate with Him and where we are joined together with Him. While our body is natural and is where our natural senses are and from its origin, it is our external or the ultimate. We might wonder, then, what is celestial? What is spiritual? We find when studying the God's Word that what is called celestial is meant 'all good', which is love and charity, and what is called spiritual is all truth and wisdom, and thence is of one's faith and intelligence.
From this, we learn that the spiritual is like a covering over the celestial or like good within truth. Love or good is the essence while truth is its existence and by both of these we are manifested in a natural body. Being either a women or female or a man or male we are different in our internal - in our mind - and in our inmost or soul as well.
From the Word we find that the inmost, the soul or the celestial entity of the male is of love and his mind or the spiritual is from wisdom, thus his love is veiled or covered one with wisdom and wisdom becomes the predominant force with him. The female or the woman's inmost is that 'wisdom of the male' and its covering is the love of the male's wisdom. Here, we see a wonderful and beautiful thing. The female and male each have love and wisdom, yet each one's love is different, but they become one when they are united. There is a feminine love that is not the same as the male's masculine love. The love of the masculine is the love of growing wise, while the feminine love is the love of that wisdom of the male. Now, there was a Divine purpose for this. There is a purpose for God creating mankind male and female.
From this, from being either created male or female, one can see why there is a desire to be joined together one with the other and, that it is not just for the propagation of the this natural life. It is for the development of our spiritual and celestial life as well. It is from Conjugial Love that we can learn that love is our desire and longing for conjunction with the other to become one with the other and, here of course, as we said, it is not just the love of sex of the natural that we are speaking of. We have learned that one is a male or a female manifested in a natural body from one's own soul and mind, having been created from its origin either male or female.
This reveals to us that the love of the female is different from that of the male. Here, we will begin to speak about a different love - a conjugial love. Conjugial love dwells within the spiritual and celestial entity of a person, it is not within the natural love of the body. That is only an appearance. In the spiritual and the celestial, in one's mind and soul, there is this same desire and longing for conjunction of love and wisdom or truth and good. This is because when love is conjoined with wisdom in a person there is happiness.
What we can draw from this is that there is an inclination of one to conjoin with the other - the man with the woman and the woman with the man. We all have this desire or the love to be wise nor can we be wise unless we have such love - the love of conjoining good and truth within us. Take away this love and we will not become wise. Wisdom comes from Love. Anyone who knows the least about God knows His Attributes are Love and Wisdom and that the one is of the other. Now, when from this love we become wise and we love wisdom or truth, we then form a love which is the love of wisdom. This love is the origin of conjugial love within a person.
The most predominant love in women is the love of wisdom, while in the man it is the love of becoming wise. If the man makes the love of wisdom foremost and this remains within him, then he develops what is called pride or the love of self-intelligence. Many of us have seen people like that. More than anything else they wish to gain recognition and prominence as being wise, as knowing more than others. Thus, the woman was created by God very special and with a special love. That love was taken from the man and given to her and, so, she became the means to receive conjugial love. By conjugial love, as we said, is meant celestial and spiritual love - the love of good and truth - and is the fundamental of all loves. Love was given and is to be prominent in the woman. It is the covering over her wisdom. Wisdom is what is prominent in man. His covering being love. This is so that mankind might receive good and truth in his of her spiritual and celestial being that there might be a Heavenly marriage of good and truth in them. There is an inclination in each of us to become conjoined with the other and become one and this because the woman was formed from the man. Thus, the woman is the love of wisdom from the man's wisdom. It becomes necessary to understand that 'woman' here is meant a person's self or what is one's own and is called 'proprium'. Here, however, we need also to remember that we are not just natural, but have a mind and a soul, which are spiritual and celestial. You might have recalled the Biblical story of the woman being made from Adam's rib.
This needs further explanation so that the two different roles and life of the man and woman - the masculine and the feminine - are clearly understood. From the Divine, that is, from God comes both good and truth into each person. However, these are received according the form either feminine or masculine. The important thing to know here is that good and truth comes from the God united or as one. The male receives the truth from God's Wisdom and the good of God's love is conjoined according to its reception in the male's understanding. In other words, the male is born as the intellectual or the understanding, that is, he can see spiritually from within his natural mind; thus, the truth may become known.
