The Lord's New Chapel is a society of The New Church. In the book of Revelation "John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." It is the Church's hope that it is the "New Jerusalem", as it were, where the doctrine comes down from God, where we are taught and learn genuine truths, where the fellowship inspired us to live from the Lord. This is called The Lord's New Church, for its doctrines are His and comes down, as it were, bringing spiritual life.
The Word and the Doctrine
All Churches believe the Word and from the Word they develop doctrine. They all say that the Word of God is a revelation of God's will for people, However, that revelation is seen differently by different religious bodies. The reason for this is that what is understood is according to the natural or literal sense. This natural or literal sense is really the outer or external accommodation to our natural senses. Within, there is an inner or spiritual meaning. This inner or spiritual sense is not seen without stopping to reflect on what is meant. In the literal sense, one sees the past (history) or the future (prophecy). Yet, with God there is only the present. In the inner and spiritual sense God is revealed directly to us, sharing His Love and Wisdom with us, guiding us in our spiritual development towards Heaven.
An example of inner or spiritual guidance.
The story of Abraham's life seen literally tells of the story of the early Hebrews. It tells of a faithful man, Abram, whom Jehovah called from his former life to follow Him. Because of his faithfulness, God changed his name to Abraham and blessed him. However, the Word is primarily the revelation of God, of His Love and Wisdom revealed to man so that we may become made into His image and after His likeness and enjoy His presence forever. Does the story - literally understood - about Abraham being tempted by God of offer his son Isaac for a sacrifice to God teach God's true attributes and qualities? Doesn't the Word also teach that God tempts no one? What sort of doctrine would it be to teach others that God demands this sort of blind faith? From an inner or spiritual understanding, the story of Abraham reveals the life of the Lord Jesus Christ when He was on earth. And this story about Abraham's temptation tells of the Lord's most grievous and inner temptations and of His combats against hell and all evils. It tells of how the Lord united Himself with man, how He became glorified, becoming the Divine Human in order to redeem mankind.
In the Lord's New Chapel spiritual truth is taught and, as such, not only are the Lord's attributes and qualities seen and learned, but His very life becomes present and active within us we 'as if' from ourselves act with and according to the truths revealed. The Questions we have concerning the mysteries in the Bible become clearly answered one by one as we learn, appropriate these genuine truths and apply them with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, which is charity. Why does Paul say that "the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life?" Weren't all the rituals of the Israelites only representative? Christian Churches today do not observe these rituals. They now understand that God is not desirous of animal sacrifices no more than He was of Isaac being sacrificed by Abraham. Obedience to the "letter" of the Word would bring death, obedience to the Lord's life to us - the Lord's life, as it were, and is the Lord's living within us. From this - the spiritual sense - we understand anew God's message of love, for in truth is goodness and in goodness is truth.
Where do we learn this information? Where is the internal sense taught?
It is found in over thirty volumes written by Emanuel Swedenborg, an eighteenth-century theologian, inspired by God. There, in internal sense of the Old and New Testaments are revealed. God opened to him the inner meaning of the Scriptures. These are "the Second Coming of the Lord." This is what is meant by the "coming of the Son of Man [Divine truth] in the clouds of heaven [the Word of God]."
When is the Word the Word with man?
No one doubts that the Church is from the Word, and that its doctrines are according to the understanding of it. Yet, it is not the Word that makes the Church, but the understanding of it. The Church is a Church according to those who are in it: such is the Church itself. From this it can be seen that if the Word is not understood, it is not the Word with a person, for the Word may not be the truth, because it may have been falsified.
Through the Lord's New Chapel there in taught a new understanding of God's will and a new effort to live according to that will. It is this unification of a new understanding and will that is symbolically called a "New Church." This Church has been instituted and established, not through miracles, but through the revelation of the spiritual sense of the Word disclosed by the Lord through Emanuel Swedenborg. In the spiritual sense, the Lord's Divine is present. In the natural sense, His Human is present. The Lord alone has accomplished this. It is by means of this revelation that there is now communication open between morals and angels; the conjunction of the two worlds - natural and spiritual - has been effected, man being in the natural sense and angels in the spiritual sense.
THE LORD IS THE GOD OF HEAVEN
-Throughout the whole of Heaven, no other than the Lord alone is acknowledged as the God of Heaven. "He is one with the Father; the Father is in Him and He in the Father" (John x.30). Angels know and perceive that the Divine is One and that it is One in the Lord. (HH 2) Those who are from the Church cannot doubt that the Lord is the God of Heaven, for He Himself taught, "that all things of the Father are His" (Matthew xi.27). To rule Heaven and earth means to receive from Him every good pertaining to love and every truth pertaining to faith, thus all intelligence and wisdom and so all happiness, in short, eternal life. (HH 5)
